Certification & Technical

John Porter Doors employs a stringent routine of certification procedures. This is the commitment we make to our customers as an illustration of our technical manufacturing competence. We work closely with trade associations and technical performance bodies to constantly assess and review our manufacturing processes to ensure we meet the highest standards required of third party certificated schemes.

Our certification and membership of established schemes allows us to pass the benefit and authority of these independent assessments back to our customers: constructors, sub-contractors, specifiers, landlords and building owners, ensuring your project meets mandatory technical compliance.

Management of technical standards ( Contract all   |   Expand all )

  • BS EN 13986 – MDF

MDF falls under the BREEAM type 'Wood Panels' and VOC emission standards are to be observed in order to meet the requirements for free formaldehyde levels.  In order for the MDF to comply it needs to meet standard: Formaldehyde E1Testing Requirement 1 to BS EN 13986:2004, to verify that regulated wood preservatives are absent and of the minimum content.

We employ exclusively Medite MDF products, specifically supplied for use in the construction and civil engineering industries, which are CE marked according to the requirements of the harmonized European standard for wood based panels EN13986. This provides the necessary assurance that Medite conforms with the European MDF standard, EN 622-5 and meets all the essential requirements for the Construction Products Directive that are relevant to the product.

In accordance with the provisions of Third Party Certification, required within the Final Regulations Order of the Airborne Toxic Control Measure (ATCM) by the California Air Resources Board (CARB), all Medite MDF products are CARB Phase 2 Compliant. The approved Third Party Certifier (TPC), Entwicklungsund Pruflabor Holztechnologie GmbH (EPH – TPC No W-08-010), is contracted by Medite to perform the quarterly assessment of the factory production control and to have the stipulated formaldehyde tests carried out by the accredited EPH test laboratory.

  • ISO certification

    ISO

The ISO family of standards relate to quality management systems, designed to help ensure we meet the needs of our customers. Our certification, presently and for future application includes:

    • BS 476 Pt 22:1987 Present Fire Test Standard
    • BS EN 1634-1:2008 Anticipated European Standard

  • PAS24 Certification

    PAS 24

Complete doorsets in our PAS24Porte range of FD30 fire rated doorsets are fully certified to meet the demands of PAS24, the recognised standard for enhanced security performance of door assemblies.  These high performance products have undergone a range of extreme mechanical attack tests based on common methods of burglary.

In advance of 2013 CE marking, European Standards EN1627-1630 have been published and it is widely acknowledged that the current PAS24 test regime is significantly higher.

Enforcing standards ( Contract all   |   Expand all )

  • Trading Standards Institute

    Trading Standards Institute

Trading Standards will prosecute manufacturers supplying not-to-standard products.  Enforced by professionals, TSI works with the Government to ensure legislation is upheld in the correct manufacture of our certificated doorsets. John Porter only support the supply of fully certificated, performance joinery products.

  • The UK Accreditation Service – UKAS

    UKAS

Our products have been tested under laboratory conditions in establishments that meet national UKAS assessment standards.  UKAS is the only body recognised by government to provide traceable measurements and performance criteria.

Warrington Exova Certification are a UKAS recognised Fire Test Facility which provides the fire certification of John Porter Doors.  This organisation has a long experience of delivering certification for customers who specify, install assess and maintain fire protection products and systems.

The drive for third party certificated products, systems and services is stronger now than it ever has been and with increased industry support and regulatory recommendation it is becoming a must-have when tendering for work.

    CERTIFIRE
CertifireCertifire is the certification for manufacturers and suppliers ensuring performance, quality, reliability and traceability for fire protection products and systems.  The CERTIFIRE brand is recognised by many regulatory authorities worldwide as an international mark of fire safety.

Choosing a product that carries the mark of a reputable third party certification body gives assurances as to the performance of the products. Using certified products, correctly installed, provides a powerful demonstration that due diligence has been served.  Products that carry the CERTIFIRE certification differentiates products and processes from non-certified equivalents.

    FIRAS
FirasWe work closely with FIRAS, the certification designed for installation contractors which has been instrumental in improving standards of passive and active fire protection product and system installation.  FIRAS is the mark of endorsement of competency in the installation of products and systems, vital for achieving the protection required.  Some CERTIFIRE approved assemblies can be substitutes for each other in a CERTIFIRE approved doorset.  However they must be fitted in accordance with JPD’s certification and that of the component supplier.  Some assemblies, for example seals in a double doorset, cannot be substituted.

    FRACS
fracsEqually FRACS is the scheme that identifies fire risk assessors who have been examined for their competency to complete high quality fire risk assessment where doors have already been installed.  Regular fire assessments are the responsibility of property owners and occupiers and in the UK it is a legal requirement of the Regulatory Reform Fire Safety Order to maintain such an assessment for any building.

Trade Associations – the management of standards ( Contract all   |   Expand all )

  • British Woodworking Federation Certifire Scheme

    British Woodworking Federation

By operating within a fire certification scheme, the regulations force less scrupulous manufacturers to improve their standards.  By being a member of schemes such as CERTIFIRE, John Porter Doors and our clients benefit from the promotion and authority of such schemes.

The British Woodworking Federation’s Certifire Scheme is different from the CERTIFIRE scheme in that is requires a much higher degree of labelling and traceability. It provides a more demanding test regime and a more reliable performance fire door solution.

  • FSC Chain of Custody

Forest Stewardship CouncilJohn Porter has full membership of the Soil Association’s Woodmark certification scheme for forest management and Chain of Custody for forest products.  From 1 October 2011 we have taken the lead in moving to full Chain of Custody compliance as a standard mandatory requirement of the supplier chain.
  • CE Marking

    CE

Compliance with the Construction Products Directive (CPD), which is identified by a product carrying a CE mark, indicates compliance with legal requirements of the European Union (EU), and allows a manufacturer to trade in any EU member state. It is basically a device to promote free trade throughout the EU with products and systems that reach mandatory requirements.

For example, a typical storey-height doorset with fanlight has over 60 component parts, all of which must be accounted for. This calls for CE marking which will become mandatory by July 2013 and is the preferred method of proving compliance with the CPD.

The Government expects that all products will be CE marked in order to provide conformity, parity with competitors and enhanced market confidence.  Construction products will be legally required to demonstrate compliance with the CPD and the most effective way is through CE marking which will ensure all safety-critical and interdependent components are correctly specified. As a leading supplier of engineered doorsets, John Porter Doors will be fully behind, and welcomes, this new legislation.

The essential requirements of CE marking include:

    • Robustness
    • Fire safety
    • Hygiene, health and the environment
    • Safety in use
    • Acoustic performance
    • Energy efficiency

The CE marking of European standards for doors and doorsets is not yet available for publication. An ISO EN test standard for fire is currently available which, while more demanding than the present BS 476 test, may be subject to review and change.

CE marking is designed to meet future legislation and will become mandatory practice during 2013.  Industry must work to this important deadline.  It is important to note that a CE marked component can be substituted by other CE marked components and manufacturers and installers must ensure that these component parts will achieve the same essential compatibility when the original specification has been changed.
