Ouseburn Wharf, St Lawrence Road, Newcastle
Customer: Tolent Construction
Client: S Harrison Developments Ltd., York
Almost eight decades ago in 1936, John Porter occupied an ex-rope works on the banks of the Tyne in Newcastle. The building was one of the first industrial buildings in the world to be constructed in 1911 from reinforced concrete. As the development of Newcastle’s quayside spread down river, and as John Porter’s requirements grew, we subsequently became squeezed by the constraints of a long, thin, ropery building.
Works on the former Porters site on St Lawrence Road in Newcastle to build 107 one and two bedroom apartments and three bed maisonettes were completed in February 2007.
Contractor, Tolent, moved onto the brownfield site in August 2005 marking an important first step for the Ouseburn regeneration scheme which has provided a major boost to the area.
All the apartments were pre-sold months ahead of construction, a huge selling point for the development being that the design layout ensures all apartments have views over the River Tyne, to the east of the Millennium Bridge.
The inevitable and resulting move in 2003 to larger premises took us from the river front on Tyneside, to a site close to the river on Wearside. John Porter Doors was delighted to secure the contract to provide quality, performance doorsets for the Ouseburn Wharf residential scheme that took the place of our factory. These apartment residences enjoy some of the finest views of the river and the 1500 doorsets for the apartment entrances and bathrooms are worthy of the setting.
This residential scheme was completed on time, on budget, and remains an attractive development with John Porter performance doorsets both protecting the occupants and contributing to the superb aesthetics of the riverside environment.
John Porter provided daily site meetings with joinery subcontractors and main contractors to ensure that a very tight construction programme was delivered on time.
