Conversion of Existing Warehouse to British Transport Police Custody Suite

John Porter assisted the development of a full custodial doorset and ironmongery solution, with architect Capita Architecture, London, for the British Transport Police who were presented with the problem of providing a new Custody Suite within a reasonable distance of the centre of London, but were unable to secure land that was either suitable or affordable.

The answer was to build a complete custody suite 'off-site' and assemble it in an existing warehouse adjacent to their Brewery Road HQ, resulting in significant savings of both time and money.

The 27 steel framed modules, comprising holding cells, interview rooms, and support offices, were craned into place after the roof of the warehouse had been removed. Once the modules were sited the roof was replaced, minimising disruption and contributing significantly to project cost efficiencies and speed of application..

Full compliance with the rigorous standards demanded for custodial accommodation ensured that the users of the suite are unable to recognise that the facility was not built by traditional means.

John Porter continues to provide custodial solutions for Britspace with HMP Littlehey, HMP Wealstun and HMP Rochester.  Approval was successfully sought from the Home Office / Ministry of Justice to provide a secure solution for these projects.
